Course Description:

The NASAR Introduction to Search and Rescue (SAR Awareness) course provides a foundational overview of modern search and rescue operations. Designed for new responders, support personnel, and those exploring involvement in SAR, this course introduces the core concepts, terminology, and structure of SAR missions across wilderness, urban, and disaster environments. Participants will gain an understanding of how SAR systems function, how missions are organized, and the critical role of teamwork and safety in successful operations.

Topics include the roles and responsibilities within SAR organizations, incident command basics, search theory, lost person behavior, personal preparedness, and responder safety considerations. Students will also explore how SAR integrates with emergency management, law enforcement, fire/rescue, and volunteer teams, making this course ideal for prospective team members, EMS providers, emergency services students, and agency partners seeking situational awareness of SAR operations.

This course serves as an excellent entry point for those considering operational SAR training such as NASAR SARTECH programs, team onboarding, or leadership development tracks. No prior SAR experience is required.
